Free shipping, sent anonymously ^^ The clear 64DD unit did not work. (I also used the Hi-Res Pak, the memory expansion pak a 64DD normally needs.) I tried putting the disc into a genuine 64DD, but without a shutter it does not seem to seat properly, so I could not check that one either. (It did go into the clear 64DD, at least.) A genuine disc went into both units, the genuine one and the clear one. Whether it was made for display, or is a modified piece or a knock-off, I cannot say. ディスクは純正の64DDに挿入しようとしましたが、シャッターが無いと正しく刺さらないようで、こちらも動作確認ができませんでした。

純正のディスクは純正、透明、どちらの本体にも刺さりました。
展示用だったのか、改造品やパチモノなのかも不明ですが、なかなかの珍品かと思いますので是非どうぞ^^

Snatched up within hours
On July 19, 2026 a Mercari Japan seller listed a transparent Nintendo 64DD, claiming they couldn’t properly assess the condition and guessing that it was a display model of some sort. They must have had a hunch that it wasn’t an ordinary 64DD considering the asking price, 1,100,000 yen, or around $7200.
Luigi Blood (64dd.org) assessed the hardware to be a prototype. According to the Hard4Games hosts, it is more likely that this is an actual prototype from the development of the 64DD hardware than a dev kit used by gaming studios for development/testing.
The listing sold within 2 hours to an unidentified buyer and, to our knowledge, no further information was made public since the sale took place. The original Mercari and Buyee pages are no longer available.
Nintendo's failed add-on
The 64DD gave the Nintendo 64 the capability to use rewritable magnetic discs holding about 64 MB each. It launched in Japan on December 11, 1999 and went nowhere else. Fewer than ten games were released for it, and the install base is estimated at around 15,000 units.
You could not buy one in a shop: the drive shipped only to subscribers of Randnet, a dial-up service that mailed out the hardware and a modem with the subscription. The service shut down on February 28, 2001.
