A $50 Frits Henningsen wing chair from Facebook Marketplace sold at Sotheby's for $107,950.

In February 2023 a woman in Beverly Hills listed a leather wing chair on Facebook Marketplace for $50, part of a yard sale she was running for family friends. Justin Miller, a home-design creator in Los Angeles, an avid Facebook Marketplace bargain hunter, messaged her and the two struck a deal.

The chair went up for sale in Sotheby's Important Design auction in New York on June 7, 2023, with an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000. Bidding ended at $107,950 with the buyer's premium. The provenance line in Sotheby's catalogue reads "Private Collection, Beverly Hills, California. Acquired from the above by the present owner."

Frits Henningsen, became cabinetmaker in Copenhagen in 1911 and ran his own workshop there from 1915. His view was that furniture comes out best when the same person designs and makes it, as such, none of his designs went into factory production. The high-back wing chair dates from around 1935. It takes a seventeenth-century English form and redraws it with the curved arms he is known for. Sotheby's catalogue calls this chair "likely one of only fifty or so examples known to have been produced".

The same model sold at Wright in Chicago in December 2021 for $52,500, against the same $30,000 to $50,000 estimate. Carina Villinger, Sotheby's head of 20th century design, called the $85,000 a record price for the model.
